Thoughtful Groom of the Week

May 15th, 2012

Ok, so this isn’t a weekly segment here at Event Design, but this little story was just too good not to share.

Imagine our delight when this weekend’s groom contacted us to say: “With all of the wedding planning, my bride didn’t get to complete a project – one that meant a lot to her.  Can you help me execute it as a surprise?”

Uhm… YES!!! We love when Grooms take the time to show their Brides how much they love them.

So, in a covert operation, our groom cleverly absconded with the bride’s turquoise and orange ribbon used throughout the wedding decor – and slipped it to us to secure the “Mr. and Mrs.” signs our team created to the backs of their chiavari chairs.  A finishing detail – tied to her vision.

Well done, sir. Well Done.

Refreshing Escort Cards!

April 25th, 2012

Here in the balmy south, the summer months bring oppressive heat.  While we have been fortunate enough to be enjoying some mid-70’s and low-humidity-80’s weather for the last few days, the heat is quickly approaching and cannot be stopped!!  Pink Lemonade, Southern Sweet Tea or whatever strikes your fancy.  These clever escort cards will be a welcomed site to your guests – a refreshing, yet informative, thirst quencher… who could ask for anything more?

Heather & Jason: A Dash of Pink and a Lot of Romance

April 17th, 2012

From my perspective, and I couldn’t tell you why, there is something inherently romantic in a moss-covered oak tree.  For those botanically savvy readers out there, we will choose, for the purposes of this blog entry, to ignore the effects of moss on an oak tree, and instead take some time to enjoy their beauty as illustrated in the pictures shared by Heather and Jason from their November wedding.

As you can see, the earthy pastel of a moss-draped oak tree complimented Heather’s blush pink bridesmaid dresses in a way we didn’t think possible.  The result? Sophistication, a little old-world style and a whole lot of beautiful!

This couple knew just the look they were going for – a soft, elegant wedding chock full of little details.  The couple’s selections echoed understated style, clean lines and beautiful simplicity.

Happy Year… Happy New Year

April 10th, 2012

For some, the words: “When you know, you know” aren’t just lip-service.  For some, these words represent the serendipitous magic that seems to hang in the air and swirl around you.  Such is the case with Jill and Marcus who enjoyed a whirlwind romance in 2011 – having  met, fell in love, found a home (subsequently started renovating it), began their move and then (for good measure), got engaged all inside of one year.  What’s better than that?!

With a little imagination and a whole lot of guts, this incredible bride managed (with a little help from Event Design) to organize an New Year’s Eve Engagement Party party people will be talking about for years to come because when guests arrived at the Don Vincente de Ybor Historic Innon December 31, 2011, they never suspected they were attending a surprise wedding ceremony and reception.  Tre celebrity!

We are honored and humbled to be included in the May/June issue of Destination Weddings and Honeymoons Magazine.  Thank you to K&K Photography for their always excellent visual depiction of a magical day.

Don’t Lose Sight of the Ceremony

April 3rd, 2012

Let’s face it:  Weddings are beautiful.  They may be sassy or sophisticated, proper or rave-like, traditional or cutting-edge.  At some point, circa 2005 or so, someone whispered into the ears of television executives and told them the brides devour all things wedding in the months leading up to their wedding.  They set off to devise a couple (soon to be followed by a series) of shows aimed at Brides eager to watch and learn everything they could about weddings, event planning, fashion, design and personalization.  They show us opulence (Platinum Weddings), self-centered brides (Bridezilla), starry-eyed enthusiasm (Say Yes to the Dress), “Are you serious!?” (My Big Redneck Wedding), ambitious do-it-yourselfers (My Fair Wedding) and even behind the scenes of wedding preparation (Whose Wedding is it Anyway?).

Designing and executing a party for, on average, over 100 people , is a difficult endeavor.  Some brides contend with full time jobs or children amidst their pursuits to design a beautiful affair.  To put things in perspective, full-time event designers carefully plan and budget their time to be able to execute the vision of their clients with grace as their full-time job… and by that we mean 50-70+ hours a week.  Stress naturally arises from balancing work, life, family, children and fur-babies without adding a huge party on top of everything else.

By now, you have no doubt read countless articles or testimonials from other brides describing a myriad of pre-wedding issues.  Brides working to successfully navigate the waters of family politics, people-pleasing and desperate cries to understand: “It’s my wedding! Why can’t it just go smoothly without a big fight?”

Well, friends, the unfortunately reality is that it isn’t going to change.  Family politics, difficult bridesmaids, unsupportive maids of honor and unexpected guests have no doubt been a part of wedding planning for centuries.  Don’t ask me to cite research, here. I’m sure it’s there, and I am sure it’s boring. *smirk*

So, what is a modern bride to do?  How can a contemporary woman with designs of conquering the world compete with those things which are out of her control?

Focus on your ceremony.

Often overlooked as “a formality” of the overall event, your ceremony is the only time you and the love of your life will stand in front of one another and announce that you will love each other till death parts you.  No one will speak but you.  No one can share their thoughts but you.  No opinions will be voiced.  When you stand at the alter, time will stop and speed up simultaneously.

Yes, perhaps mom will weigh-in on the decor.  Maybe grandma will comment about the music you selected.  Food may be dry, vendors may not show up when expected, friends may bicker, ex-girlfriends may show up, uncle’s may drink too much – and for select and lucky few, all of the above!  But nothing can go wrong when you are professing your love and committing a life to one another.

Take the time to think about your ceremony.  No one said it has to be stodgy – and while you may have some limitations imposed by the facility, organization or venue from whom you have rented space, the vows you speak to one another can never be censored.

Whether you chose to write your own vows, copy someone’ from the Internet or pull from your favorite movie, poet, Taylor Swift, LMFAO, or Star Trek, “They can’t take that away” from you (Those George Gershwin Fans out there will have picked up on that reference).

Your options are limitless and untouchable – so don’t lose sight of what’s important and what brings you to the party in the first place: your love and commitment to one another.

Modern Boy Baby Shower!

November 1st, 2011

My life has been full of many sweet moments that I am always deeply thankful for.  Topping my list of favorite experiences has to be having witnessed a cherished friend of many years carry her first child while knowing exactly how long and deeply she has dreamed for that exact season of life.   In fact, the euphoric feeling I had as I watched my dear friend Lora become more and more overjoyed as her due date approached was very familiar to me.  Having the honor to frequently witness many couples anxiously anticipate a wedding celebration that has danced through their dreams across their lives, conjures up the same energy and excitement within that never seems to grow old.   The opportunity to channel my excitement into the planning and coordination of Lora’s modern baby boy shower, couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.  With a smile that lights up a room and a personality that tends to draw everyone near, she was sure to have an equally inviting baby boy.  With that in mind, I chose a palate of crisp white with deep hues of turquoise, orange, and brown accents.  These color choices, along with a buffet of homemade scrumptious finger foods and desserts, a sophisticated ‘Bellini Bar’, and a ‘Create Your Own Bib or Onsie Station’, created a fun and relaxed atmosphere that led guests to linger for hours.  What’s better than watching a close friend carry her first baby or a young couple anticipate their wedding day?  Seeing the new mother hold her newborn child for the first time and a young couple kiss for the first time as husband and wife never fail to fill any person fortunate enough to be close by with an indescribable and uninhibited happiness.  Enjoy the photos and a formal introduction to Jake Chambers Weihe!
